China
In 2003 a three-year cooperative project between RFSU and the China Sexology Association (CSA) was completed. The aim of this project was to improve and increase sexuality education for young people in China. The project was directed towards young men and women between the ages of 18-24.
Between 2001-2002 a prevention programme targeting women from rural areas who had moved to Shanghai was also implemented. The aim of the project was to reduce the number of cases of STI and HIV among both men and women, as well as the number of unwanted pregnancies.
Democratic Republic of the Congo
RFSU previously worked with Congolese organisation Association des Animateurs Sanitaires – Uvira (AASU). This was an initiative made by the local branch of RFSU in Stockholm. The aim of the partnership with AASU was to improve the health situation in the DRC through the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS, by providing the public with information and sexuality education. The project ended in 2011.
East Africa
Between 2011-2014 RFSU supported a regional IPPF project in Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Malawi. Tha goal was to work to build cooperation between the member organisations of the LGBT Network Alliance and develop methods for working with LGBT issues. This cooperation mainly focused on how parts of IPPF’s declaration concerning sexual rights that include LGBT-persons could be realized in the network organisations’ efforts.
Estonia, Lativia, Lithuania
Between 2003-2004 an HIV prevention project was implemented in the Baltic States. The aim of this project was to improve sexuality education and increase access to youth clinics/centres.
Kaliningrad
In 2007-2008 RFSU led a project along with the Ministry of Health in Kaliningrad. The project started with a conference in Kaliningrad during the spring of 2007. Information concerning young people and prevention in Sweden and Russia was presented at the conference. The goal was to reduce the spread of HIV, venereal diseases and unwanted pregnancies among young people between the ages of 13-17. To reach this goal a number of people who come into contact with young people through their work within the healthcare and social sectors were provided with sexuality education courses. The project was completed in the spring of 2008 with a follow-up conference where the future and development possibilities were discussed.
Lebanon
In 2011 RFSU supported a project in Lebanon aimed at providing a safe house for LBT* women.

Malawi
In Malawi RFSU worked principally with the Red Cross. RFSU:s role was to educate Red Cross personnel, teachers and youth educators in methods for providing sexuality education with a gender perspective. Efforts took place in the southern districts of Chiradzulu and Mwanza as well as in the northen district of Nkatha Bay
Our work in Malawi was not financed by Sida.
Mongolia
Between 2001 and 2004 Sida financed a three-year cooperative project with RFSU and the National Centre Against Violence (NCAV) in Mongolia. The project aim was to increase public knowledge about men’s violence against women and children in the home.
Russia
Between the years 1998-1999 and 2000-2001 RFSU collaborated with the Russian Family Planning Association (RFPA). The goal was to improve the sexual and reproductive health of young people in seven different regions in North Western Russia: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Pskov, Veliky Novgorod, Petrozavodsk, Murmansk and Archangelsk. The strategy was to broaden and improve collaboration between RFPA and authorities connected with education, health, and other related subjects. An additional strategy was to introduce and develop sexuality, and co-existence education in schools.
South Asia LGBT Network
Between 2007-2012 RFSU coordinated a Sida supported LGBT*-network comprised of fifteen organisations from five different Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The network aimed to provide a strong and lasting group of organisations that worked for LGBT-persons’ health and rights in South Asia.
The network was supported by Sida but was not a part of RFSU:s framework agreement.

Tanzania
Between 1987-1998 RFSU helped providing young pregnant women and girls with an education. This was RFSU:s first international project.
The overall goal is strengthened rights and improved health of 60,000 women, girls and children in the two project areas; Singida Urban and Iramba in central Tanzania.
Wateraid in Tanzania is primarily responsible for facilities, and RFSU (through staff at the former RFSU Tanzania office) for education and trainings on SRHR.
RFSU is using various methods, including male involvement, as well as advocacy for local ownership on SRHR issues. The project is engaging a range of local and national stakeholders and implementing partners.
Uganda
Sweden has been supporting the Naguru Teenage Information and Health Centre (NTIHC) in Kampala for many years.
RFSU has been contracted for technical support in the areas of SRHR, advocacy and Management since late 2013. In this support, RFSU contributes as a dialogue partner and trainer with perspectives on sexualities and rights as well as on advocacy in line with priorities made by NTIHC. Midwifes from the RFSU clinic have been involved in the support.
In 2017, the focus is on how to integrate a rights’ based approach in the NTIHC clinical services and in the organisations approach. RFSU has experience from Uganda through earlier projects with The Maternal Health Project as well as an earlier partnership with the IPPF member association RHU.
Vietnam
Between 1999-2000 RFSU cooperated with the Vietnam Youth Union with the aim of improving the sexual and reproductive health of young people in Vietnam.
Zambia
RFSU ended its project in Zambia in 2013. Before that RFSU provided support to establish and implement sexuality and co-existence courses, both within and outside of schools, in the city of Kafue. The goal of this project was to build the capacity of and create cooperation between the involved organisations. RFSU aworked with Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia and the Youth Vision of Zambia with the aim of increasing the availability of sexuality education and youth clinics in southern Zambia.
