Kenya
In Kenya, RFSU supports organisations working on reproductive health, sexuality education, body rights, gender issues, sexual and gender-based violence and sexual rights.
Kenya is a political and economic hub in Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite strong economic development, large parts of the Kenyan population live in poverty, especially in rural areas.
Abortion is not allowed and homosexuality is illegal. Maternal mortality is high and access to sexual and reproductive health services is poor, especially in rural areas and urban slums.
Partner organisations in Kenya
Here are some of RFSU's partner organisations in Kenya.
Centre for the Study of Adolescence (CSA)
RFSU supports the Centre for the Study of Adolescence in its advocacy work to include sex education in the national curriculum. This involves increasing policymakers' and other stakeholders' understanding of the importance of sexuality education for young people.
Feminists for Peace Rights and Justice Centre
Feminists for Peace Rights and Justice Centre is a collective of young feminists that emerged after several people were sexually abused in Kenya's Kibera slum. They have now set up a meeting place in the area where they provide support, training and shelter for three people at a time. The organisation is strongly rooted in the most vulnerable part of the population.
HIAS Kenya
HIAS operates with six core values at the heart of its mission: welcome, justice, empathy, partnership, courage, and resilience. The organisation collaborates with refugees, partners, and allies worldwide to foster a just and inclusive society. In Kenya, HIAS works alongside local and international organisations to advocate for refugees' rights. LGBTQI refugee-led organisations are supported by HIAS Kenya and RFSU, to improve access to SRHR services.
The Kenya Legal & Ethical Issues Network on HIV and AIDS (KELIN)
KELIN is a small but well-established organisation formed to strengthen human rights in relation to HIV. Today, the organisation has adopted a broader SRHR (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights) perspective. RFSU supports KELIN's advocacy work on abortion.
Kenya SRHR Alliance
Kenya SRHR Alliance consists of 19 large and small organisations. In a joint three-year programme, RFSU and the SRHR Alliance will work together to improve sexuality education in Kenya so that it is not just about health but also about pleasure. This will benefit all members, including those that do not focus on SRHR.
Zamara Foundation
Zamara Foundation supports girls who have become unintentionally pregnant and have been forced to leave school. Teenage pregnancy has several complex causes, including a lack of sex education, no access to abortion and poor access to contraception. Zamara has a special programme for young girls where they receive sexual education and learn about their rights.
